About Opal Opal is Australia's national gemstone. Australian opal is renown for its play of colour and around 97% of the world's opal is produced in Australia. Opal is mined at shallow depths and was formed between 15 and 30 million years ago. It is a mineraloid gel deposited at relatively low temperatures and may occur in the fissures of almost any kind of rock. Opal is presented as Solid, Doublet and Triplet. Value is enhanced by the depth of colour from red to violet-purple. Triplet opals consist of three sections. The crystal dome which covers the second layer, which is a slice of genuine opal. The third layer is the black backing to the opal.
